Notoriously Dangerous: Kgb Road Safety Concerns

Notoriously Dangerous: Kgb Road Safety Concerns

On behalf of Law Office of Jason Skala, LLC posted in auto accidents on Monday, April 8, 2019.

The Knik Goose Bay Road is a popular scenic drive with a history rooted in the Knik trade center era, pre-Anchorage days. Unfortunately, the road is notoriously dangerous for regular commuters and tourists. Although over $9 million has already been dedicated to improving safety on the road, auto accidents are still four times more likely on the road than the national average. Improvements include added signals, signs and striping.

Fatalities have continued to rise on the KGB Road for the past three years. The community has made complaints about driver safety on the KGB Road and is pushing administration to make changes sooner rather than later. Fortunately, the state has two construction projects scheduled for the road in 2020 and 2021.

$125 million will be dedicated to safety and congestion improvements from Centaur Avenue to Vine Road. The state plans to widen the road to four lanes with a multi-use pathway on the north side and larger shoulders. There will also be controlled access lines.

4 tips for staying safe on the KGB Road

People commuting to and from Anchorage can take some measures to stay safe while waiting for roadway improvements. Consider the following four tips from the DOT.

  1. Always drive sober: One-third of fatal auto accidents involve a drunk driver. Stay sober when you are behind the wheel.
  2. Wear a seat-belt: Over half of fatal traffic accident victims fail to wear seat-belts that could have saved lives.
  3. Do not drive distracted: Smartphones are the most common distraction for drivers, however, they are not the only problem. Eating, children in the backseat and changing a song on your playlist can be just as distracting. In fact, studies are showing that even hands-free technology can cause accidents.
  4. Report dangerous drivers: If you see a drunk or reckless driver, report them immediately by calling 911. Give emergency services a description of the vehicle and your location. Calling attention to law enforcement officers can help make the roads safer.

If you do experience an accident on the KGB Road, call 911 to report the accident, even if no one is injured. If you have been injured, you may need to seek help from a legal professional to obtain the compensation you need to fully recover.
